You are More than Just a Salesman

I get so frustrated when I see “consultants” who just teach you sales tricks. Or, the opposite, consultants that just analyze your books and tell you how to nickle-and-dime your way to success. Yes, someone with a background in used car sales will make a buck in your school or any other, but that is not who you are or why you went into this industry. You are an artist, and hiring a salesman and a bookkeeper would be far cheaper than spending the kind of money those guys ‘ll cost you.
At Karate Consulting, we know how to make a successful business. It doesn’t involving nickle-and-diming your students, dimming the lights at 7pm or practicing your speech in front of the mirror. It doesn’t involve exaggeration. It does involves developing both your skills and your attributes. It does involve systematizing everything you do, automating your business systems, and polishing everything that touches the public. It does involve building a team of experts to run your school (while getting as many of those experts as possible to work for free!) Master yourself; master your art; master your school. Do what it takes to find the formula, and retention will no longer be an issue. Sales will be fun, and you’ll finally be able to take a day off every once in a while…
As for our core competencies:
- We can tell you what you’re missing–why each hour spent of your time is returning less and less profit.
- We can show you what works. Business is business. People may flatter you by saying “this is nothing like you’ve ever seen before” or “anyone who hasn’t worked in the martial arts industry doesn’t have any idea what they’re talking about,” but that’s just mathematically untrue. While, yes, most of our staff has worked in karate schools, we’ve also run colleges–and frankly it ain’t all that different. Quit asking people in the box about what’s outside the box.
- Let us show you how to get more adult students, or more child students, or whatever you’re looking for.
- Decide how much to charge. No, you can’t just raise prices until people get scared off. In 7th grade that’s called “guess-and-check” and that’s not the way real businesses work.
- Figure out whether and how much to spend on your internet presence.
- Never hire an ad agency unless you have metrics set up to figure out if it’s working.
- We can get you a website that pays the bills and generates foot traffic. I can absolutely guarantee you will be at the top of all listings on google without spending much money.
- Harness your volunteers. Again, there are consultants who will teach you all the secrets of Warren Buffet–that’s not what you need. You need to know what your students and their parents are willing to do for next to nothing.
- Expect continual check-ins and mentoring. We will write concrete goals and metrics with you, and, if you need it, analyze your numbers every month. We can help you hire specialists or volunteers if you need. We can design flyers, pamphlets, etc. for you on any budget. Anything you need–use us ’til you’re smarter than we.
So give us a call at our Little Rock office at (501) 247-3255, and we’ll rush over/fly out/whatever to run a diagnostic on your school and your numbers. Depending on your needs, we can consult by phone, email, IM, or the whole we-fly-out-for-a-week thing. It just depends on what you need–and no, we will not–WILL NOT–sell you more than we think you can exponentially monetize. Leave win/lose to the car salesmen, and expect a long term blissful relationship with us.
Colin has experience in American Kenpo, Shaolin Kempo, Kosho Ryu Kempo, Hapkido, Gumdo, Tai Chi, Taekwondo, Shotokan, Fencing… oh, I don’t know what else, but a bunch.
Besides 22 years in and around the martial arts, Colin Jensen has been to MBA school, started multiple successful companies, and been a college president. He has worked in administration of schools with $10M budgets (and also in ones the size of your school,) and has worked on $100M deals. He has two teaching licenses in two states apiece (totalling four), and two degrees in education. Colin has considerable experience in computers and internet marketing. As much as any of this, he’s an ENFP–meaning he’s an idea mole–someone who can walk into any business and give you pages of ideas you’ve never heard of before.
Give us a call, we’ll decide whether there’s a fit, and hit it from there.
