There are a lot of people who call themselves “consultants” out there, and a few who call themselves “martial arts consultants.” 90% of them are just a pile of templates and will pound your school into their cookie cutter. After all, they come from those schools that you don’t want to turn into! Like a chiropractor, you should judge your consultant on how little you have to see them. If they can come for one afternoon and wow your staff, more power to you. But if they don’t send their guru, if they introduce additional things you have to buy from them, or if they give you answers without listening to your questions, they’re not a good fit for you.
We at Karate Consulting have a lot of experience in the arts. But we have a lot of experience elsewhere, too. In the business world, it’s called zero gravity principle of consulting–it means you get the best bang for your buck taking advice from those who are tangentially related to your business. Businesses that are similar to yours will give free advice as part of your professional organization. But you’re looking to do a better job than what’s being done. That’s why AT&T will never hire consultants who just retired from Verizon–they already know everything about Verizon. At Karate Consulting we strive for that balance. We have a lot of experience in a lot of martial arts. But one of us was also President of a famous college! One of us was VP of Operations over a company in Japan. More than one of us owns a dojo. One of us makes championship rings for a living. Some of us are spiritual, some of us are money-oriented. Some have worked at huge McDojos; some teach adults-only out of their homes. We have M.B.A.s and degrees in education. Whether one of us drives out for a few hours to give you our gut reaction, or whether a team of us flies out for a week, we have the resources and the passion to strike that balance. We do this for fun, we are generous with our time, and we guarantee results!
